Croatia

What was recently an up-and-coming travel destination, Croatia is now a highly popular choice for summer vacationers looking for beauty on the Mediterranean. While this means increased prices, traffic, and bodies moving around the country during peak season, the underlying attributes that gave this country its popular status have been preserved.

To Do List:
  • Split and Trogir; two neighbouring cities worth a day or two exploring. Split, the largest city in Croatia is bustling with young travellers while Trogir is more family-oriented. Both are UNESCO sites and host impressive ruins and unique architecture.
  • Explore the Dalmatian coast and its islands by boat. A highlight of this country are its natural bays and remote islands such as Šolta, Vis, Hvar, & Palmižana. There are many companies that offer private sailing charters or, group sailing trips with set itineraries. In July 2012, we chose The Yacht Week, and as 23-year-olds looking for little sleep and lots of socializing, we thoroughly enjoyed it. (more here)
  • Hike through Croatia's most impressive national park, Plitvice, in any season. We visited July 2015- it was hot, busy, and beautiful.
  • The seaside city of Makarska, the ferry site for the popular Brac island, is worth a stop on a coastal drive for a stroll along the waterfront and a coffee at one of its port-side cafes.
  • Dubrovnik hosts an impressive fortified old town with beautiful alleyways, viewpoints, and a higher number of both tourists and prices.
