Add this to your road trip through North Dakota for beautiful scenery and a chance to get out of your car and stretch your legs! A 36-mile detour off of the I94 will take you through the entire south unit loop of the park. This paved loop leads you through a beautiful portion of the North Dakota badlands. Taking your time - in about 1.5-2 hours - you may see bison, prairie dogs, short hiking trails, and generally traffic-less roads. Also, just off the interstate and outside of the national park, the Painted Canyon rest stop provides amazing panoramic views of the badlands.
